Exploding Garden Hoses?! Millions Recalled After Injuries!
Millions of HydroTech-branded garden hoses are being recalled across the United States due to a significant safety hazard: they can burst unexpectedly during use. This recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), impacts approximately 3.6 million hoses and follows numerous reports of injuries.
Why Are The Hoses Being Recalled?
The recall involves HydroTech 5/8-inch “Expandable Burst-Proof Hoses.” These hoses, sold at major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, Target, Ace Hardware and Do It Best between January 2021 and April 2025, are prone to bursting if the internal plastic strain relief breaks or becomes unthreaded. This can create a dangerous situation for users.
What Are The Risks?
According to the CPSC, the bursting hoses pose both impact and hearing hazards. The sudden release of pressure can cause injuries from flying debris, and the loud noise of the burst itself has led to reports of temporarily impaired hearing.
Injuries Reported
Winston Products, the importer of the hoses, has received over 222 reports of bursting incidents. These incidents have resulted in at least 29 injuries, including:
- One bone bruise
- Two sprains
- Five reports of temporarily impaired hearing
How to Identify Recalled Hoses
The recalled hoses were sold in various lengths (25, 50, 60, 75, 100, and 200 feet) and colors. To determine if your hose is affected, check the date code markings on the end of the hose that attaches to the spigot. This is visible when the black rubber washer is removed. Hoses with no markings, or markings ending in -211, -212, -213, -214, -221, -222, -223, -224, -231, -232, -233, -234, -241, -242 or -243 are included in the recall.
Additionally, some packages display the manufacture date in a month-year format (e.g., 0824 for August 2024), which also indicates a recalled product.
What To Do If You Have A Recalled Hose
Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled HydroTech hoses. If purchased at Ace Hardware, Do It Best, Home Depot, or Walmart, the hoses can be returned to those stores for a full refund. Other affected customers should contact Winston Products to initiate a claim online.
