Harford County's New Emergency Alert System: Are YOU Protected?
Harford County, Maryland, has launched a new emergency alert system, HarfordCoMD Alerts, designed to deliver faster and more reliable notifications to residents. This upgrade aims to improve public safety by providing real-time updates on critical events.
What kind of alerts will I receive?
The system will disseminate alerts for a range of emergencies, including:
- Severe weather warnings
- Infrastructure outages
- Major traffic disruptions
- Evacuations
- Shelter-in-place orders
- Major or localized crimes
- Missing persons
Beyond emergencies, residents can opt-in to receive non-emergency notifications about public events, hydrant flushing schedules, and street sweeping.
How do I register?
While individuals registered with the county’s previous system, Blackboard Connect, have been automatically transferred, officials are encouraging everyone to create a new registration. Here's how:
- Text "HarfordCoMD" to 410-457-3655
- Visit the registration website
Registration is free and quick. The system allows you to register family members or others on their behalf. Multiple registrations for the same email or phone number will not result in duplicate messages.
Why is this important?
According to Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly, public safety is the administration's top priority. This new system will enhance the county's ability to provide citizens with timely and accurate information during emergencies.
