Braves Grab Carrasco! Yankees Trade Pitcher in Deadline Deal?
The Atlanta Braves have acquired right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco from the New York Yankees in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. The move comes as the Braves are dealing with a significant number of injuries to their pitching staff. Jack Curry of the YES Network first reported the trade.
Carrasco, 38, had signed a minor league deal with the Yankees this past winter that included a $1.5 million base salary. He made six starts and two relief appearances for the Yankees this season, posting a 5.91 ERA at the MLB level. He was later designated for assignment and outrighted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he has pitched to a 3.27 ERA in 10 starts and one relief appearance.
Since mid-June, Carrasco has been particularly effective in Triple-A, recording a 2.45 ERA with a strong ground-ball rate. However, his strikeout rate during that period has been relatively low. Despite his struggles in the majors this season, the Braves are hoping that Carrasco can provide some much-needed stability to their injury-plagued rotation.
This is the second trade in as many days for the Braves, who also acquired Erik Fedde from the St. Louis Cardinals after he was designated for assignment. The Braves' injury list includes Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez, Grant Holmes, Spencer Schwellenbach, and AJ Smith-Shawver, all of whom are on the 60-day injured list.
The Yankees, meanwhile, are looking to bolster their own pitching depth as they push for a playoff spot. Trading Carrasco allows them to free up a roster spot and potentially acquire additional assets before the trade deadline.
Braves Desperate for Pitching Help
The Braves' acquisition of Carrasco underscores their dire need for pitching. With several key starters sidelined, the team is scrambling to find reliable arms to fill out their rotation. Carrasco, despite his struggles at the major league level this season, offers a veteran presence and a track record of success.
What to Expect from Carrasco in Atlanta?
It remains to be seen how Carrasco will perform in Atlanta. He will likely be added to the Braves' 40-man roster and could potentially make an immediate impact in the team's rotation. His ability to generate ground balls could be particularly valuable in Atlanta's home ballpark.
- Carrasco brings veteran experience to a young Braves team.
- His ground-ball rate could be an asset.
- The Braves are hoping he can regain his past form.
