Rangers' Bullpen Shuffle: Webb to IL, Curvelo Gets His Big League Shot!
The Texas Rangers are making moves as they fight for a playoff spot! Right-handed pitcher Jacob Webb has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 29th, due to back spasms. This is a blow to the Rangers' bullpen, especially with Chris Martin also sidelined with a calf strain.
In a corresponding move, righty Luis Curvelo has been called up from Triple-A Round Rock. Curvelo was already on the 40-man roster, making the transaction seamless. This marks Curvelo's first call to the majors and a significant opportunity for the 24-year-old.
Webb, signed last winter to a $1.25MM deal, has been a consistent presence in the Rangers' bullpen this season, posting a 3.75 ERA over 48 innings. While his strikeout rate is down, he's excelled at inducing soft contact, minimizing damage. Losing Webb's reliability puts extra pressure on the remaining relievers.
Curvelo's journey to the majors has been a long one. He began his professional career at 17 in the Mariners' system in 2017. This past winter, the Rangers signed him to a Major League contract, demonstrating their belief in his potential despite his lack of MLB experience.
This season at Triple-A, Curvelo has pitched 38 2/3 innings, recording a 3.26 ERA, a 23.5% strikeout rate, and a 10.6% walk rate. While not spectacular numbers, they were enough to earn him this opportunity. His first appearance will be his MLB debut.
The Rangers are reportedly looking to add high-leverage relievers before the trade deadline to solidify their bullpen and potentially add a closer. Curvelo will be looking to prove he can be a part of the solution as the Rangers push for a playoff berth.
What to Expect from Curvelo?
Curvelo brings a fresh arm and a hunger to prove himself. While his Triple-A numbers aren't eye-popping, he's shown flashes of potential. The Rangers are hoping he can translate that potential to the big leagues and provide valuable innings down the stretch.
The Rangers' Playoff Push
The loss of Webb and Martin puts added pressure on the remaining relievers. The Rangers will need Curvelo to step up and contribute immediately if they want to maintain their position in the playoff race. The next few weeks will be a crucial test for the young right-hander.
