Yankees' Volpe in Slump? Cone's Wild Idea to SHOCK Fans!
Yankees' Anthony Volpe Needs a Boost? David Cone Suggests a Standing Ovation!
Former Yankees pitcher and current color commentator David Cone has a unique proposition for Yankees fans: give struggling shortstop Anthony Volpe a standing ovation. Cone floated the idea before Wednesday’s game, drawing inspiration from Philadelphia Phillies fans who famously rallied behind Trea Turner in 2023.
“I keep thinking about the Philadelphia Phillies fans [two years ago], who gave a struggling Trea Turner a standing ovation. It was spurred on by a superfan for the Phillies,” Cone said on the pregame show. “You know what? I’ll make that suggestion too. Maybe the Yankee fans should give Volpe a standing ovation.”
The Phillies' example is compelling. Turner, in the first season of a massive 11-year, $300 million contract, was underperforming. His pre-ovation slash line was .235/.290/.368 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs. A superfan, Jon McCann, spearheaded the effort to offer support instead of boos.
The result? After the standing ovation on August 4th, Turner exploded, slashing .364/.398/.754 with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs.
However, there's a key difference in Volpe's situation. While his bat has shown promise since the All-Star break, his defense has been a significant liability. Volpe has six home runs and nine RBIs with a .933 OPS while hitting .236 in 12 games since the All-Star break.
Volpe leads the major leagues with 16 errors this season, including three in his last two games and five in his last nine. Recent throwing struggles to first base have further compounded the issue.
Could a standing ovation work for Volpe? It's a gamble, but Cone believes it could provide a much-needed confidence boost. Only time will tell if Yankees fans embrace this unconventional approach.
