Bella Ramsey, the star of HBO's hit series "The Last of Us," has opened up about the challenges and rewards of filming Season 2, particularly the impact of Pedro Pascal's character, Joel's, shocking death. Ramsey, who plays the resilient Ellie, shared insights into the emotional toll of the pivotal scene and the evolving dynamic of her character.

Facing the Fallout of Joel's Death

The brutal demise of Joel (Pedro Pascal) at the hands of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) in Season 2 left fans reeling. Ramsey recalled the intensity of filming the scene where Ellie is forced to witness the horrific event. "Seeing his little face on the ground was pretty awful. I’ll never forget it," Ramsey told the LA Times, highlighting the lasting impact of the scene.

The absence of Pascal on set was also felt deeply by Ramsey. "I did feel the sense of, ‘Well, I’m just here every day all day for the next seven months and that’s so exhausting,’” Ramsey said. “But I love hard things. Doing hard things is how I feel satisfied and fulfilled.”

Ellie's Evolution and New Relationships

Season 2 sees Ellie grappling with the trauma of Joel's death and navigating new relationships, particularly with Dina (Isabela Merced). Ramsey emphasized the importance of this relationship in understanding Ellie's growth. As the couple journeys from Jackson, Wyo., to Seattle, Ellie's protective instincts intensify, especially upon learning of Dina's pregnancy.

"I say this with all the love for Ellie, but she is quite selfish," Ramsey explained. "But then she has these moments of, ‘Wait, it’s not just me anymore.’ She’s forced out of her inherent selfishness by love. She was forced to think about other people, which is growth for her."

Stunt Work and Emmy Nomination

Ramsey also discussed the physical demands of the role, including extensive stunt training and challenging on-location shoots. One particularly difficult scene involved crawling out of the freezing ocean in the middle of the night. Despite the hardships, Ramsey finds satisfaction in overcoming these challenges.

Adding to the excitement, Ramsey received an Emmy nomination for their performance in "The Last of Us." They are nominated alongside Carrie Coon, who plays Ramsey's mother in the upcoming film "Harmonia."

As fans eagerly await news about Season 3, Bella Ramsey's insights offer a glimpse into the dedication and passion behind bringing Ellie to life in "The Last of Us."
