The Boston Red Sox have claimed catcher Ali Sánchez off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, both clubs announced. Toronto recently designated Sánchez for assignment. The Red Sox now have a full 40-man roster.

Sánchez, 28, initially signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays this offseason. He's been called up twice as an injury replacement. His first stint was about a week long when Tyler Heineman was on the injured list. After Heineman returned, Sánchez was designated for assignment, cleared waivers, elected free agency, and re-signed with Toronto. He returned to the majors when Alejandro Kirk went on the concussion IL. Kirk's return led to another DFA for Sánchez, but this time, it means a new chance in Boston.

This season, Carlos Narváez and Connor Wong have been the Red Sox's primary catching duo. Narváez is having a solid season but missed Wednesday’s game due to knee soreness. Wong, however, is struggling offensively, with a .160/.235/.179 batting line.

What's Next for the Red Sox Catchers?

The Red Sox's plan remains unclear. Narváez might be placed on the injured list. They could also option Wong to the minors. Another possibility is carrying three catchers to give Narváez rest. This would require optioning another player, potentially David Hamilton, to make room for Sánchez.

Sánchez's Major League Experience

Sánchez debuted in 2020, but his major league experience is limited. He has 131 big league plate appearances with a .186/.224/.237 batting line. He's received good ratings for his fielding and has generally performed well offensively in the minors. From 2022 to now, he has 931 Triple-A plate appearances with a .273/.350/.420 batting line and a 97 wRC+.

  • Key Stat: .273 batting average in Triple-A from 2022-Present
  • Possible Impact: Provides catching depth and a potential offensive upgrade.

With Narváez's recent injury and Wong's offensive struggles, Sánchez could get a chance to prove himself behind the plate for the Red Sox.
