Steelers Training Camp: Surprises, Standouts, and Players on the Hot Seat!
Pittsburgh Steelers training camp is in full swing, and after ten practices, some players are exceeding expectations while others are struggling to keep pace. General Manager Omar Khan's offseason moves are already showing promise, with trade acquisitions like DB Jalen Ramsey and WR DK Metcalf making significant impacts.
New Additions Shine
Ramsey's versatility and athleticism have been a game-changer for the Steelers' defense, allowing them to implement more nickel pressures, lock down tight ends, and disguise coverages effectively. He's playing nickel, free safety, and outside corner, proving his worth. Metcalf's connection with Aaron Rodgers' quick release has resulted in numerous successful slant routes, becoming a key part of the offensive playbook. It’s not all bad news around Aaron Rodgers, but he could be doing better. The offense has been dominated at times
Rising Stars
DT Derrick Harmon, the first-round pick, has seamlessly integrated into the starting lineup, showcasing his physicality and pass-rush abilities. TE Darnell Washington is also emerging as a receiving threat, making impressive catches during camp. WR Scotty Miller, has impressed with his route running and hands.
Roc Taylor: A Sleeper Emerges
Undrafted free agent WR Roc Taylor has been a standout performer, consistently impressing coaches and teammates. While securing a top spot on the depth chart might be a challenge, his performance warrants attention, especially if he excels on special teams. The Steelers are desperate for talent at the position, and the odds of the undrafted rookie becoming their top choice to replace George Pickens seem unlikely.
Players Under Pressure
Not everyone is thriving. Some players need to turn things around quickly to avoid missing the final roster. Time is becoming their enemy. The preseason process is long, and just because someone struggles one day doesn't mean the end of the world is near. There is time for players to stack strong days ahead.
With plenty of training camp still remaining, the Steelers have ample opportunity to fine-tune their roster and identify the players who will contribute to a successful season.
