Schottenheimer's Emotional Start as Cowboys Head Coach

Brian Schottenheimer's dream finally came true as he took the helm as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams. The game, held in Inglewood, California, was a significant moment for Schottenheimer, marking the culmination of over 30 years of coaching experience. He shared an emotional moment with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones before the game, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity.

"I got a little bit choked up coming to the stadium, and then when Jerry and I talked a little bit, I'll be honest, I got a little emotional," Schottenheimer said. "It's been a dream of mine to be in this chair."

Rams Take the Victory in Preseason Matchup

Despite the emotional significance, the Cowboys suffered a 31-21 loss to the Rams. Schottenheimer acknowledged that the result wasn't ideal, but he remained optimistic and focused on improvement. The Cowboys struggled early, allowing the Rams to gain a significant lead in the first quarter. Schottenheimer noted the need to clean up penalties and improve their offensive performance.

"It's definitely not a storybook beginning, that's for sure," Schottenheimer said. "We just struggled. I think it was 25 plays to six at one point, and that's obviously not a great way to start."

The NFL preseason Week 1 also featured exciting matchups between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Jacksonville Jaguars, and the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers. Quarterback Tyler Shough had a strong debut for the Saints, completing 15 of 22 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown. The Chargers' defense impressed with a pair of interceptions and five sacks against the Saints. Other notable plays included Charlie Smyth's 50-yard field goal for the Saints and Raheim 'Rocket' Sanders' 11-yard touchdown run for the Chargers.

Bennett Shines for the Rams

Stetson Bennett, the Rams quarterback, had a strong performance, passing for 188 yards and two touchdowns. His performance contributed significantly to the Rams' victory over the Cowboys.

While the Cowboys' loss wasn't the start Schottenheimer envisioned, the preseason is a time for learning and growth. The team will undoubtedly analyze the game film and work to improve before the regular season begins.
