Oregon Weather Alert! Rare Summer Soaking Incoming: Get Ready!
Get ready, Oregon! A rare summer atmospheric river is heading our way, bringing much-needed rain to the Northwest. After a heatwave that saw Portland hit 99°F for three consecutive days, a dramatic shift in weather patterns is about to occur.
What to Expect: A Drippy Friday and Soaking Saturday
Starting Thursday, expect cooler temperatures and a slight chance of morning drizzle. Friday will be cloudy and humid, with light rain throughout the day – think 'drippy'. The main event arrives Friday evening, with a soaking expected for most areas west of the Cascades, lasting through Saturday sunrise.
The Salem Statesman Journal reports that the Cascade Mountains and coast could see 1-3 inches of rain, while the Willamette Valley may receive just under an inch. The heaviest rain is expected Friday evening and Saturday morning, gradually clearing for sunnier skies on Sunday.
Why This Matters: Drought Relief and Wildfire Prevention
This unseasonal rain event is a welcome sight as Oregon faces expanding drought conditions and heightened wildfire danger. More than half of Oregon is currently under a moderate drought, with much of the Willamette Valley and northwest Oregon experiencing severe drought.
While this atmospheric river won't end the drought entirely, it will significantly help dampen wildfire risks. According to Tanja Fransen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland, the rain is “going to help with the drought and wildfire danger, but it’s also not a ‘season ending’ event.” Weather is expected to heat up again next weekend, so fire prevention remains crucial.
Weekend Outlook: Partly Dry and Mild
The good news is that the worst of the rain will be short-lived. Saturday afternoon and Sunday should be mainly dry, with temperatures hovering between 75-80°F. So, while you might need an umbrella on Friday, the weekend is shaping up to be pleasant.
Understanding Atmospheric Rivers
An atmospheric river is a concentrated stream of moisture transported from the Pacific Ocean. While more common in fall and winter, this summer occurrence is a rare but welcome phenomenon for Oregon.
