Emotional Farewell: DP World Tour Veteran Hangs Up His Spikes!
DP World Tour veteran Mike Lorenzo-Vera has officially retired from professional golf, marking the end of a 20-year career. His final appearance came at the Omega European Masters in Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland, a location holding significant personal meaning for the 40-year-old Frenchman.
Lorenzo-Vera announced his decision to retire earlier this year, citing ongoing mental health challenges. He explained that the personal costs of tournament golf had become too steep, making it necessary to prioritize his well-being. “I could have said my wrist hurts but was just the brain that was hurting,” Lorenzo-Vera told europeantour.com, emphasizing the importance of speaking openly about mental health.
Despite never securing a victory on the DP World Tour, Lorenzo-Vera was a popular figure among fans and fellow players. He achieved 32 top-10 finishes, including five runner-up positions, and had a successful run on the Challenge Tour, winning the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final in 2007. His best Major finish was T-16 at the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black.
His final round was an emotional one. After missing the cut, Lorenzo-Vera was greeted by his children as he walked off the 9th green. “It was amazing to have all my family here but I played like s*** and just didn't manage to go through the emotions,” he said.
The Omega European Masters held particular significance for Lorenzo-Vera, as it was during the tournament a decade ago that he learned of his father's passing. Choosing Crans-sur-Sierre for his farewell was a deliberate and poignant decision.
