Harambee Stars Scout Talent Ahead of Chad Friendlies & CHAN
The Harambee Stars are ramping up preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda. As part of their preparations, Kenya is scheduled to face Chad in two friendly matches on Saturday, June 7th and Tuesday, June 10th.
Assistant coach Anthony Kimani, affectionately known as 'Modo', revealed that head coach Benni McCarthy and his technical team are actively searching for talented players to bolster the squad. This search aims to increase the team's depth and create a more competitive environment.
Expanding the Harambee Stars Roster
“As the coach [McCarthy] said earlier on, there is more room for players to come into the team,” Kimani stated, according to Capital Sports. He emphasized that the current squad members have a golden opportunity to impress McCarthy and secure their place in the team's future.
However, Kimani reassured players who weren't selected this time that the door to the national team remains open. “That does not shut the door on those who have not made the team this time round… the national team is always a revolving door.”
Competitive Spirit in Training
The current squad comprises 25 locally-based players, a strategic decision considering the upcoming CHAN tournament. Kimani expressed his satisfaction with the competitive spirit displayed during training sessions.
“The mood in the camp is great and every player that has been selected is trying to give his best. I think they are giving us a very good headache as a technical bench on who to select.” He added, “Everybody is raring to go and are showing the coach why they deserve to be selected come the friendly against Chad.”
McCarthy will be aiming for his first victory as the Harambee Stars' coach. His previous matches included a 3-3 draw against Gambia and a 2-1 defeat against Gabon in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers held in March.
