Urgent Search: Teen Swept Away in Swartkops River Rescue Attempt!

GQEBERHA – The search is ongoing for 17-year-old Curtis Samson from Bloemendal after he was swept away by strong currents in the Swartkops River on 10 October. The tragic incident occurred while Curtis was attempting to rescue a friend who had gotten into difficulty in the water at the Tigerbay Rod Club.

According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, police and SAPS divers responded to a drowning report at approximately 09:55. Initial reports indicate that Curtis and his friends were fishing and entered the water to cool off. One of the boys encountered trouble, and Curtis bravely went to his aid but was himself caught in the strong current.

"On arrival, they were informed that the 17-year-old boy was with friends busy fishing. They went into the water to cool off. One of the boys got into trouble in the water, and the 17-year-old boy went in to assist his friend but found himself also in trouble and was swept away by the current," Captain Janse van Rensburg stated.

Due to deteriorating water conditions, the search was temporarily suspended around 13:00. SAPS Swartkops has opened a missing person’s report and efforts to locate Curtis are continuing.

The community is urged to exercise extreme caution near the Swartkops River, particularly given the strong currents. Any information regarding Curtis's whereabouts should be reported to SAPS Swartkops immediately.
