Gauteng Gridlock Alert! Major Road Closures This Weekend! 🚧

Gauteng motorists, brace yourselves! Major traffic disruptions are expected this Friday and Saturday (October 24th & 25th) across Tshwane, Johannesburg, and Ekurhuleni. This is due to a large-scale joint traffic operation preparing for the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Which Roads Will Be Affected?

High-security routes will be impacted, including:

  • N1, N3, N12 highways
  • M1, R21, R24, and R512
  • Key routes around OR Tambo and Lanseria airports
  • Roads near Waterkloof Air Force Base
  • Routes in Sandton, Rosebank, Melrose (Maude Street, Daisy Street, Whiteley Road, Melrose Boulevard)
  • Urban roads like Rand Show Road, Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive, Corlett Drive, Oxford Road, Jan Smuts Avenue, and Nasrec Road.

What to Expect:

Expect temporary road closures, lane restrictions, and rolling traffic stops. The operation will run from 9am to 1pm on Friday and 8am to 2pm on Saturday.

Who's Involved?

The joint operation involves the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the South African Police Service (SAPS), and various metro police departments (JMPD, EMPD, TMPD, GTP).

What You Should Do:

Plan ahead! Allow extra travel time, use alternative routes, and stay updated on traffic conditions. Emergency and essential services will be prioritised.

Alternative Routes Suggested:

  • Use M57 as an alternative to the R21 between Johannesburg and Pretoria.
  • Use Beyers Naudé Drive instead of R512 or N1 for west/northwest travel.
  • For east-west travel, use smaller regional roads through Germiston, Kempton Park, or Bedfordview instead of R24/N12.
  • Within Sandton/Rosebank/Parktown, use side streets parallel to Jan Smuts, Oxford, or Rivonia Road.

The RTMC says these measures are essential to enhance public safety and enforce traffic compliance. Stay safe and plan your journey accordingly!
