Petrol Price Shock! December Fuel Hike to Hit SA Hard ⛽🇿🇦

Prepare Your Wallets: Massive Fuel Price Hikes Coming in December!

South African motorists are bracing for a rude awakening as December approaches, with significant petrol and diesel price increases looming. The Central Energy Fund (CEF) data paints a grim picture, forecasting substantial under-recoveries across all fuel grades.

According to current projections, petrol prices are expected to rise by approximately 16 cents per litre for 93 octane and 21 cents per litre for 95 octane. However, diesel users will be hit even harder. The price of diesel (0.05% sulphur) is predicted to increase by a staggering 69 cents per litre, while diesel with (0.005% sulphur) could jump by as much as 84 cents per litre. Illuminating paraffin is also set to see a significant increase, potentially rising by 74 cents per litre.

These projected increases are primarily driven by international oil prices and the Rand/Dollar exchange rate. Brent crude is currently trading around $64.45 per barrel, and the exchange rate sits at approximately R17.06/$.

What This Means for You

These fuel price hikes will undoubtedly impact South African consumers, especially those planning to travel during the festive season. Increased fuel costs will likely lead to higher transportation expenses, potentially affecting the prices of goods and services across the board.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) is expected to make a final determination on fuel prices by the end of November, with the new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, December 2nd. Motorists are advised to prepare for the potential financial strain and adjust their budgets accordingly.
