Oakmont, PA - J.J. Spaun has secured his first major golf title at the US Open, overcoming weather delays and a challenging final round to emerge victorious. The tournament, held at Oakmont Country Club, was briefly halted due to inclement weather on Sunday, adding to the drama of an already tense competition.

Weather Interruption

The final round faced a 90-minute delay as heavy rain swept through the area. Play was suspended just after 4 p.m. ET, with puddles forming on the greens, forcing players and spectators alike to seek shelter. The PGA Tour cited "dangerous weather" as the reason for the suspension.

Spaun's Magic Moment

Despite the weather interruption and a rocky start with five bogeys in the first six holes, Spaun demonstrated resilience and determination. He birdied four of the last seven holes, culminating in a stunning 65-foot birdie putt on the 18th to seal the victory. This remarkable finish allowed him to defeat Scotland's Robert MacIntyre by two strokes, finishing with a two-over 72.

"Just to finish it off like that is just a dream," Spaun said after his win. "You watch other people do it... you see crazy moments. To have my own moment like that at this championship, I'll never forget this moment for the rest of my life."

A Storybook Ending

Spaun's victory is being described as a "storybook, fairytale ending." His impressive birdie on the 17th, after driving the par-four green, set up the tap-in birdie that put him ahead. He joins an elite list of US Open winners who finished with birdie-birdie, including legends like Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson.

Resilience and Determination

Spaun's journey to the top hasn't been without its challenges. He faced health issues, including misdiagnosis of diabetes in the past. However, his perseverance and commitment to his game have paid off. Prior to this major victory, Spaun's only PGA Tour win was the 2022 Texas Open.

"As bad as things were going, I just still tried to just commit to every shot," Spaun said. "I tried to just continue to dig deep. I've been doing it my whole life."
