Cape Town, South Africa – The Western Cape is preparing for a prolonged period of cold and wet weather, with forecasts predicting several days of challenging conditions throughout the week and into the next. Anton Bredell, MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning, has assured residents that the provincial government is ready to respond.

Disaster Management Teams on Alert

Disaster and emergency services are on high alert, closely monitoring the situation to ensure a rapid response to any incidents. Bredell emphasized that the Provincial Disaster Management Centre is coordinating with district disaster centres and local municipalities to ensure public safety during the winter months.

Tragic Reminder: Safety First

Following the recent tragic drowning of a young woman at a low-level bridge in Slanghoek, Bredell stressed the importance of public awareness regarding safety precautions during severe weather. He urged residents to exercise extreme caution near rivers and other potentially hazardous areas.

Prepare a Household Emergency Plan

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre advises all residents to create a comprehensive household emergency plan. This plan should include assessing the risk of flooding based on your location and assembling a “grab-and-go” kit.

  • Important documents: IDs, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies, and clinic cards.
  • Cellphone charger.
  • Essential medications and prescription copies.
  • Credit cards and money.
  • A well-stocked first aid kit.

Protect Our Infrastructure

Bredell also issued a plea to the public to avoid littering or dumping waste into stormwater drains, as this can exacerbate flooding by preventing proper water drainage.

Stay Informed and Stay Safe

During heavy rains, it is crucial to stay informed and heed official warnings. Monitor radio broadcasts and trusted social media channels like the South African Weather Services or your local municipality for the latest updates.
