Johannesburg – The Gauteng provincial government has taken decisive action, removing three senior officials from their positions after they failed to pass mandatory lifestyle audits. This move follows an investigation initiated earlier this year, aimed at rooting out corruption and ensuring accountability within the province's public service.

In early 2025, the Gauteng government enlisted the expertise of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to conduct thorough lifestyle audits. The audits targeted key personnel in high-risk roles, including heads of departments (HODs), supply chain management officials, and other senior employees deemed vulnerable to corruption or financial impropriety.

The results of the initial audits were concerning. A significant 37% of those audited failed, raising serious questions about their financial integrity and potential conflicts of interest. These officials were given an opportunity to provide written explanations for discrepancies between their reported income and their observed lifestyles.

Lesufi Announces Firings Following SIU Investigation

Speaking at a press briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi addressed the media, outlining the outcome of the SIU investigation into the remaining four HODs under scrutiny. The investigation revealed that three of these HODs had failed the audit process. Premier Lesufi, emphasizing the gravity of the situation, announced their immediate removal from their respective positions.

"Of the four outstanding reports of these HODs, three of them came back as failed audit outcomes and on the basis of this, I have taken a decision to remove these HODs from their positions," Lesufi stated firmly. "The DG [director-general] will facilitate this process and will make the public announcement on the changes of administrative heads of departments."

Commitment to Impeccable Leadership

Premier Lesufi underscored the government's commitment to ensuring that all departments are led by individuals with the highest ethical standards. This latest action, he asserted, reaffirms that dedication to transparency, accountability, and responsible governance.

"This reaffirms our commitment that departments must be led by people with impeccable credentials," Lesufi emphasized. The Gauteng government is sending a clear message: those who abuse their positions for personal gain will face swift and decisive consequences.

The lifestyle audits are designed to identify instances where an official's lifestyle appears significantly out of proportion to their legitimate income. This can be an indicator of corruption, bribery, or other illicit activities. The SIU's investigations delve into the financial affairs of these officials, examining their assets, liabilities, and spending patterns to determine whether their lifestyles are justifiable.

The removal of these three senior officials represents a significant step in the Gauteng government's fight against corruption. While the names of the officials have not yet been released, the director-general will be issuing a public announcement regarding the changes in the administrative leadership of the affected departments. This move demonstrates a serious commitment to ethical governance and accountability within the province's public sector. The process is ongoing, and further audits and investigations are likely as the government strives to maintain the highest standards of integrity.
