DORMAA-AHENKRO (Bono), Sept. 11, GNA - The National Tenants Union of Ghana is calling for market-conscious leadership within Ghana's communications sector amidst rising tensions between the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation and MultiChoice Ghana, the operators of DStv.

Mr. Reindolph Afrifa-Oware, the Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs of the Union, criticized the sector minister, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, for his recent threats to shut down DStv if the company refuses to reduce its subscription fees. Mr. Afrifa-Oware described the minister's stance as “regulatory overreach” during an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

“Shutting down DStv over its refusal to reduce subscription fees by 30 percent lacks legal grounds and is economically irrational,” Mr. Afrifa-Oware stated. He emphasized that Ghana operates within a free market economy, making it difficult to legally compel a private entity to drastically cut prices without addressing the underlying cost structures.

He further cautioned that such threats could undermine investor confidence and discourage foreign direct investment in the communications sector, which relies heavily on innovation and competition. “This kind of populist posturing may win headlines, but it sends the wrong signals to the international business community,” he warned. He urged for leadership that grasps the nuances of open markets rather than wielding authority as a weapon.

Mr. Afrifa-Oware advocated for a strategic focus on digital transformation, broadband expansion, and support for local tech startups. He encouraged the minister to build upon the achievements of his predecessors by expanding fiber optic networks, providing ICT training to girls, and fostering an environment conducive to innovation. He stressed that if affordability is the ultimate goal, alternative solutions should be explored rather than resorting to coercive measures.

What's Next for DStv in Ghana?

The future of DStv in Ghana remains uncertain. The Tenants Union is urging the government to reconsider its approach and engage in constructive dialogue with MultiChoice to find a mutually agreeable solution. The outcome of this situation could have significant implications for the broader communications sector and investor confidence in Ghana.
