Accra, Ghana - Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George has announced the formation of a multi-agency taskforce to combat the smuggling and use of pirated DStv decoders from Nigeria in Ghana. This initiative aims to protect Ghana's revenue, jobs, and local content industry.

Taskforce to Tackle Cross-Border Piracy

Speaking at a press briefing, Minister George explained that the taskforce is a result of collaborative efforts between the National Communication Authority (NCA), MultiChoice Africa, and MultiChoice Ghana. The committee he chaired identified that the influx of illegal DStv decoders from Nigeria has been negatively impacting Ghana's economy and the quality of service received by customers.

Impact of Piracy on Ghana

  • Loss of tax revenue for the state
  • Transfer of jobs from Ghana to Nigeria
  • Denial of proper customer service to Ghanaian subscribers
  • Decline of Ghana's local content creation industry

The taskforce will comprise representatives from various key institutions, including the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, the NCA, the Cyber Security Authority, the Ghana Domain Name Registry, the National IT Agency, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Police Service, MultiChoice Africa, and MultiChoice Ghana. Minister George emphasized his commitment to working closely with agency heads to ensure a coordinated and effective approach to addressing the piracy challenge.

Increased Value for DStv Subscribers

In related news, MultiChoice Ghana is set to offer increased value on DStv packages exclusively for Ghanaian subscribers. Minister George has secured up to 50% extra value for Ghanaian DStv subscribers from October onwards.

DStv's Commitment to Ghana

Multichoice Ghana, the operators of DStv in Ghana, have periodically been updating their packages and offerings to provide the best possible entertainment experience for their subscribers. This initiative demonstrates their commitment to the Ghanaian market.
