Cocoa Price Hike: E go Affect Chocolate Inside Ghana?
Ghana, wey be number two for the world when e come to cocoa production, dey face serious wahala. Even though we dey produce plenty cocoa, chocolate still be luxury for many Ghanaians. As of October 2, 2025, cocoa price dey go up for the world market, but this one no dey directly make chocolate cheaper for we inside Ghana.
Why chocolate dey cost too much for Ghana?
The Wahala of High Cocoa Prices
Global cocoa price dey go up because cocoa no dey enough. Plenty things dey cause this shortage, like bad weather, cocoa swollen shoot virus disease (CSSVD), old cocoa farms, and galamsey (illegal mining) dey take over cocoa lands. This one dey make raw cocoa expensive for manufacturers all over the world.
How E Dey Affect Ghana?
Even though the high price dey bring more money for Ghana when we export cocoa, e no mean say chocolate go cheap for we inside Ghana. COCOBOD (Ghana Cocoa Board) dey fix the price wey farmers go sell their cocoa for, so say dem go get stable income. But this one no dey solve the problem of expensive chocolate for ordinary Ghanaian.
- Bad weather dey affect cocoa production.
- Cocoa swollen shoot virus disease (CSSVD) dey kill cocoa trees.
- Old cocoa farms no dey produce plenty cocoa again.
- Galamsey dey spoil cocoa lands.
What Can Be Done?
Government need to find ways to support local chocolate production and make chocolate more affordable for Ghanaians. We need to protect cocoa farms from galamsey and help farmers replant old farms with new, disease-resistant cocoa trees. If we do this, maybe one day, chocolate no go be luxury for Ghana again.
