Harambee Stars: Benni McCarthy Urges Patience After Chad Draw
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy is calling for calm after Kenya's 0-0 draw against Chad in an international friendly played in Morocco. The match, held on Saturday, June 7th, has drawn criticism from some fans, but McCarthy is urging Kenyans to give him time to build a strong team.
The South African legend, appointed on a two-year contract until the 2027 AFCON, is yet to secure his first win as coach. Prior to the Chad draw, Kenya played out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Gambia and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Gabon.
McCarthy's Plea for Time
McCarthy defends his start by explaining that he needs time to properly assess his players and understand their capabilities. He emphasized the difference between playing for local clubs like AFC Leopards, Tusker, or Gor Mahia, and representing the national team. He remarked that the players need time to gel and understand the demands of international football.
"I am trying to build the squad for CHAN, these are just preparation games, friendly games, that you try and see players that you have in your disposal, of course, I want to win," McCarthy stated. He highlighted the challenges of integrating players who haven't played together and who are adjusting to the intensity of international competition.
Building for the Future
McCarthy wants to select the best players available and prepare them for the step up from the Kenyan league to the international stage. His focus is on the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) and other future assignments. He believes that with time and patience, he can mold the Harambee Stars into a competitive force.
The coach's message is clear: Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a successful national team. He is asking for the support and understanding of Kenyan football fans as he works to build a brighter future for the Harambee Stars.
