Stone Roses Bassist Mani Mounfield Passes Away at 63

Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the influential bassist for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has sadly passed away at the age of 63. The news was confirmed by his brother Greg in a heartfelt Facebook post, stating, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother Gary Mani Mounfield. RIP RKID.” He later added that Mani was “Reunited with his beautiful wife Imelda.”

The cause of death has not yet been revealed. Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown also paid tribute to Mani on X, writing, “REST IN PEACE MANI X.”

A Key Figure in Manchester's Music Scene

Mounfield joined The Stone Roses in 1987, after playing with The Waterfront, and remained with them until their split in 1996. His arrival is widely credited with transforming the band's sound, adding a rock edge to their earlier, more twee style. Ed Power of The Independent noted that Mani's recruitment “changed” something fundamental about the group, evolving their sound into something “slicker, sleeker, groovier.”

Following The Stone Roses' initial breakup, Mani joined Primal Scream, becoming a full-time member and forming a strong bond with guitarist Robert “Throb” Young. He later rejoined The Stone Roses for their highly anticipated reunion shows from 2011 to 2017, much to the delight of fans worldwide.

Beyond the Music

Outside of music, Mani was known for his passion for angling, a hobby he picked up as a child fishing in the canals of Manchester. He spoke fondly of his experiences in a 2008 interview with The Guardian, recalling encounters with wildlife and the less savory aspects of city life.

Mani's passing marks a significant loss for the music world, and he will be remembered for his undeniable talent and contribution to some of the most iconic bands of the late 20th century.
