Football legend Michael Vick is making waves at Norfolk State University (NSU), even with a challenging season. Despite the Spartans' 1-10 record, Vick's presence as head coach has led to a significant increase in game attendance.
The Vick Effect: Packed Stadiums
NSU's homecoming game against South Carolina State drew a staggering 47,273 fans, a sharp contrast to the 24,960 who attended the previous year's game against Morgan State. This surge in attendance occurred even after the university raised ticket prices by 82% to comply with NCAA revenue-sharing agreements. Reserved seating jumped to $130, and faculty/staff tickets exceeded the previous year's price, settling at $100.
New Ticketing Policy Plays a Role
A new ticketing policy, requiring all attendees (including alumni, vendors, and tailgaters) to have a valid game ticket, contributed to the increased count. This policy encouraged thousands who might not have previously entered the stadium to purchase tickets, thus validating the total attendance.
However, even factoring in the policy change, the increase is undeniable. Vick's star power, combined with national interest and a more controlled event, resulted in the largest homecoming crowd in NSU history.
Brotherhood on the Sidelines
Beyond the numbers, Vick's impact extends to the team's culture. He's reunited with former Virginia Tech teammate Andre Kendrick, who serves as the Spartans' running backs coach. Kendrick's son, DreSean, also joined the team as a wide receiver, creating a strong sense of family within the program.
"When I’m standing up talking to the boys and I see DreSean, it’s a constant reminder of where life can take you,” Vick said, highlighting the importance of brotherhood and mentorship.
Despite the losing record, Michael Vick's presence has brought a renewed sense of excitement and community to Norfolk State football. His influence on attendance and team dynamics is a testament to his enduring appeal and leadership.
