Michigan State Football: QB Woes Ahead of Iowa Clash

Michigan State Spartans football is facing a quarterback dilemma as they prepare to face Iowa. Both starting QB Alessio Milivojevic and backup Aidan Chiles are dealing with injuries, casting uncertainty over the team's offensive strategy.

Milivojevic Banged Up

Head coach Jonathan Smith revealed that Milivojevic sustained injuries during the Spartans' recent loss to Penn State. The redshirt freshman endured five sacks in the game, highlighting the offensive line's struggles. Smith remains optimistic about Milivojevic's availability for the Iowa game, stating, "He is definitely midseason-healthy after a couple of starts. We are optimistic that he’ll be good to go this weekend." The Spartans have allowed a concerning 35 sacks this season, ranking them seventh-worst among FBS teams.

Chiles's Availability Unclear

Adding to the quarterback concerns, junior Aidan Chiles, who previously held the starting position, was sidelined with an injury and seen wearing a walking boot during the Penn State game. His availability for the Iowa matchup remains uncertain, with Smith indicating that a decision will be made later in the week. "We're gonna kind of see if he can work himself to being available by the end of the week," Smith said. "I think there's a potential chance. He doesn't have something that he's deemed out for the rest of the year."

Milivojevic's Test of Grit

Regardless of who starts, the quarterback will face a significant challenge against Iowa. Following a disappointing loss to Penn State, the Spartans desperately need an offensive spark. Milivojevic, in particular, will need to demonstrate resilience and leadership, especially considering the pressure he's been under. He was sacked seven times in the game against Minnesota and five times against Penn State.

Sack Stats

  • Chiles was sacked 21 times in the first eight games.
  • Milivojevic has been sacked 14 times in his six appearances.

The Michigan State Spartans' finale against Maryland will be a night game at Ford Field in Detroit.
