Accra Sky Train Project: Former GIIF Bosses Seek Bail Variation
Accra, Ghana - Former Board Chairperson of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, and former CEO of GIIF, Solomon Asamoah, are seeking a variation of their bail conditions in connection with the ongoing Sky Train project case. Their lawyers have filed an application requesting the court to amend the bail terms requiring them to report to case investigators.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi and Mr. Asamoah are currently facing trial at the Criminal Division of the High Court on charges of causing financial loss of $2 million to the state. The alleged financial loss stems from a deal related to the proposed construction of a Sky Train in Accra. They have pleaded not guilty to six counts, including conspiracy, willfully causing financial loss to the state, and intentional dissipation of public funds.
Both individuals were granted bail with a combined sum of GH¢25 million and two justified sureties. One of the bail conditions requires Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi to report to the police weekly, while Mr. Asamoah is obligated to report to the investigator every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
During a recent court session presided over by Justice Comfort Tasiame, the lawyers orally requested a variation of these terms. The court has directed them to formally file a written application outlining the reasons for the requested change, allowing the Attorney-General to respond.
The case has been adjourned to June 24, 2025, for a Case Management Conference (CMC). During the CMC, the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, is expected to withdraw certain witness statements related to the case.
Prosecution's Case
The Attorney-General's office accuses Mr. Asamoah and Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi of unlawfully transferring $2 million from GIIF's account to Africa Investor Holdings Limited. The details of the transfer and its link to the Sky Train project remain central to the ongoing trial.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming Case Management Conference is a critical stage in the proceedings. The potential withdrawal of witness statements could significantly impact the prosecution's case. The court's decision on the bail variation request will also be closely watched. The public awaits further developments as the legal process unfolds, aiming for a fair and just resolution to the matter.
