Ato Essien: Calls for Presidential Pardon Intensify Amidst Health Concerns
Growing calls are mounting for President John Dramani Mahama to grant a presidential pardon to William Ato Essien, the former CEO of the defunct Capital Bank. Essien was convicted in April 2023 and sentenced to 15 years in prison on October 12, 2023.
Advocates for Essien's pardon argue that the cases against other individuals implicated in the collapse of various banks have been discontinued since the current administration took office. They contend that it is unfair for Essien to remain incarcerated while others walk free.
Several notable figures have publicly voiced their support for Essien's release, citing his deteriorating health and current use of a wheelchair. He is reportedly receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
Dr. John Apea, Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), has announced plans to spearhead a formal petition urging a presidential pardon for Essien. Dr. Apea stated his decision stems from concerns about a perceived miscarriage of justice and Essien's declining health.
"This petition is not a defence of financial mismanagement. It is a call for a more balanced and humane approach to justice – one that takes into account not only legal outcomes, but also the human condition and our moral responsibility as a nation," Dr. Apea stated.
Kwaku Sintim-Misa, also known as "KSM," appealed to the President on Facebook, stating, "I’m begging you, your Excellency, please, he’s in a wheelchair, grant him clemency."
Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, former CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), echoed similar sentiments on Facebook, questioning why Essien remains imprisoned while others involved in the banking sector crisis are free.
Key Arguments for a Presidential Pardon
- **Disparate Treatment:** Other individuals implicated in similar banking scandals have had their cases discontinued.
- **Health Concerns:** Essien's deteriorating health and reliance on a wheelchair are cited as humanitarian reasons for his release.
- **Justice and Fairness:** Advocates argue that Essien is being unfairly singled out for punishment.
