Ghana Parliament Adjourns Sittings in Honour of Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi
The Parliament of Ghana has suspended its sittings from Monday, July 7th to Tuesday, July 8th, 2025, following the sad passing of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi. The announcement has cast a pall over the House, with members from both sides expressing their condolences and paying tribute to the late legislator.
The adjournment was prompted by a request from the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who urged the First Deputy Speaker, Mr. Bernard Ahiafor, to halt proceedings as a sign of respect for the late MP. Afenyo-Markin officially announced Kumi's death, stating with regret, “Mr. Speaker, this is very sad. I break this unfortunate news with great regret and hesitation, but it is my duty to do so.” He confirmed the Minority Caucus was in contact with the bereaved family and offered condolences on behalf of the entire caucus to the family and the people of Akwatia.
Parliament observed a minute's silence to honour the memory of the late Akwatia MP.
The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, added his voice to the expressions of sympathy, supporting the motion for adjournment and conveying condolences from the Majority side. He stated, “We extend our condolences to them. Our prayers are with them, and as a House, we share in this profound grief. This is not just a loss for the Minority, as he was first a member of this House before joining the Minority.” Ayariga further requested the adjournment to allow members to reflect and offer support to one another.
Ernest Yaw Kumi: A Rising Star Gone Too Soon
Ernest Yaw Kumi, aged 40, was considered a promising figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He secured the Akwatia parliamentary seat in the 2024 general elections, garnering 19,269 votes and defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Henry Yiadom Boakye, who received 17,206 votes. Prior to his election, Kumi had successfully challenged the incumbent, Ama Sey, in the NPP primaries in 2023, demonstrating his political ambition and drive.
His untimely death comes as a shock, leaving a void in both his party and the Akwatia constituency. Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
