The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in Ghana, working with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Police Cybercrime Unit, has successfully dismantled a cyber fraud gang operating near Dodowa, specifically in Sasaabi along the Dodowa road in the Greater Accra Region. This operation highlights Ghana's commitment to combating cybercrime and protecting both its citizens and foreign nationals from exploitation.

Joint Operation Leads to Arrests and Confiscation

The raid, which took place on Thursday, July 3, 2025, involved a coordinated effort by a 12-member tactical police team and senior CSA officials. Twenty-five Nigerian nationals were arrested, all suspected of being involved in large-scale cybercrime activities. Authorities confiscated over 40 laptops and 25 mobile phones, believed to have been used in orchestrating financial fraud schemes targeting victims in Ghana and abroad.

Whistleblower's Tip-Off

The operation was triggered by a distress report received by the Computer Emergency Response Team – Ghana (CERT-GH) from a Nigerian national. He claimed he was being held against his will and forced to participate in cyber fraud. The whistleblower provided his mother’s contact in Nigeria, which helped confirm his identity. Further investigation by the CSA’s Law Enforcement Liaison Unit revealed he had been officially declared missing in Nigeria. He also reported that approximately 20 other individuals were being similarly exploited, leading to urgent cross-border intelligence coordination.

Ghana's Stance on Cybercrime

An official at the CSA, speaking anonymously, stated, "This operation underscores Ghana’s zero-tolerance policy on transnational cybercrime and our firm resolve to protect individuals, both Ghanaians and foreign nationals, who criminal enterprises exploit." This successful operation sends a strong message to cybercriminals operating in or targeting Ghana.

AI's Role in Cybersecurity

In related news, cybersecurity experts in Ghana are increasingly advocating for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to combat modern cyber threats. Mr. Antwi Isaac Kwame, a Ghanaian network engineer and cybersecurity researcher, emphasizes that AI is crucial for detecting, responding to, and investigating cyber threats. He argues that AI systems are enabling a new era of intelligent, responsive, and scalable security infrastructure capable of adapting to ever-evolving attack patterns. This is particularly important as modern enterprise networks become more complex and interconnected, increasing the attack surface for cybercriminals.
