Bob Odenkirk, the star of "Better Call Saul" and "Nobody," has revealed a surprising motivation behind his foray into action films: impressing his former "Saturday Night Live" colleagues. In a recent appearance on Conan O'Brien's podcast, Odenkirk admitted that the grueling training and intense action sequences in "Nobody" were partly fueled by a desire to wow his comedy peers.

From Comedy Writer to Action Star

Odenkirk, who was a writer on "SNL" from 1987 to 1991, specifically mentioned Conan O'Brien, Robert Smigel, Adam Sandler, and David Spade as targets of his action-movie ambitions. "I kept thinking about Spade, I don’t know why," Odenkirk chuckled, imagining Spade's reaction: "He would go see it and go like, ‘What the f–k?'"

The actor spent two years training with stunt coordinator Daniel Bernhardt to prepare for the role of Hutch Mansell, a seemingly ordinary family man with a deadly past. This dedication allowed Odenkirk to perform many of the fight scenes himself, adding authenticity to the character.

O'Brien's Reaction and 'Nobody 2'

Conan O'Brien recalled being initially skeptical when Odenkirk first told him about "Nobody." However, he was quickly impressed by Odenkirk's performance. "When it came out, I was just, ‘Oh, he’s so good at this,'" O'Brien shared, revealing that the film inspired him to ask for a cameo in the upcoming sequel, "Nobody 2."

Odenkirk's Transformation

The transition from comedy writer to action star wasn't easy. Odenkirk emphasized the challenges of transforming his body and mindset. His dedication to fitness not only allowed him to perform the demanding action sequences but also potentially saved his life when he suffered a near-fatal heart incident on the set of "Better Call Saul."

"Nobody 2" is on the horizon, promising more action and potentially more cameos from Odenkirk's impressed "SNL" buddies. Stay tuned for more updates on this unlikely action franchise!
