A powerful coastal storm is currently battering portions of North Carolina and Virginia, bringing with it heavy rain, strong winds, and significant flooding concerns. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the storm continues to impact the region.

Widespread Impacts: Rain, Wind, and Flooding

The storm system, which began forming off the mid-Atlantic coast, is expected to slowly drift north over the next few days, bringing multiple rounds of unsettled weather. Wind gusts near 60 mph have been reported, and forecasters warn of potential flash flooding due to heavy rainfall. Many areas could receive 2-3 inches of rain, with some locations potentially seeing 3-5 inches or more.

FOX Weather Correspondent Katie Byrne reports that conditions are worsening in Nags Head, North Carolina, with most people staying off the roads and remaining indoors for safety.

Power Outages and Coastal Concerns

The strengthening coastal storm has already led to power outages in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Coastal areas are facing the threat of massive waves and dangerous rip currents. A wind advisory is in effect for parts of the Outer Banks until 2 AM Tuesday, with coastal winds gusting up to 45 mph. The combination of high tide and high seas could result in minor coastal flooding and ocean overwash, particularly along Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.

Severe Weather Threat

In addition to heavy rain and strong winds, there is a low-end severe weather threat in areas near the Outer Banks. An isolated waterspout or two may be possible, although this threat is expected to diminish as the storm weakens onshore.

Looking Ahead

While the exact track of the storm remains uncertain, forecasters anticipate widespread heavy rain. Some models suggest the storm could move further north into Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey. By Wednesday, conditions are expected to gradually improve as the storm lifts north and weakens. However, coastal areas may still experience gusty breezes and rough seas through the end of the week.
