A tragic incident has renewed warnings about the dangers of subway surfing. A 15-year-old boy from the Bronx lost his life after falling from the top of a 7 train in Long Island City on July 4th. The incident occurred at the Queensboro Plaza station.

According to police reports, officers from the 108th Precinct and Transit District 20 responded to a 911 call at approximately 2:45 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered the young male lying unconscious and unresponsive on the track bed. EMS transported him to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where he was pronounced dead. The victim was identified as Carlos Oliver, residing on Sheridan Avenue in the Bathgate section of the Bronx.

Investigators concluded that Oliver was riding on top of the 7 train as it entered the station when he fell onto the tracks below. This incident highlights the extreme risks associated with subway surfing.

MTA's Urgent Plea

NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow expressed his sorrow and emphasized the preventability of the tragedy. "This was as avoidable as it is tragic," Crichlow stated. He urged family members, friends, teachers, and anyone with influence over children contemplating riding outside subway cars to dissuade them, emphasizing that it is a suicidal act, not a video game.

'Ride Inside, Stay Alive' Campaign

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has been actively campaigning against subway surfing. Last month, the MTA updated its "Ride Inside, Stay Alive" campaign, featuring BMX athlete Nigel Sylvester. Sylvester, a Laurelton native, speaks with children about the severe dangers of subway surfing in audio announcements played every 10 to 15 minutes inside subway stations and cars along the 7 line.

Sylvester joined Crichlow and high school students at the Queens Plaza subway station in Long Island City to promote the latest initiatives of the campaign. This ongoing effort seeks to educate and deter individuals from engaging in this dangerous activity.

  • Subway surfing is extremely dangerous.
  • The MTA is actively working to prevent these incidents.
  • Parents and educators are urged to talk to children about the risks.

The MTA hopes that renewed awareness and continued education will help prevent future tragedies and save lives.
