Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil has filed a $20 million claim against officials from the Trump administration, alleging wrongful imprisonment, malicious prosecution, and defamation. Khalil, a prominent figure in pro-Palestinian campus protests, claims he was unfairly targeted for deportation due to his activism.

In a statement, Khalil emphasized his determination to hold the former administration accountable. He stated that he wouldn't be intimidated into silence and is seeking either financial restitution or an official apology, along with changes to deportation policies. "They are abusing their power because they think they are untouchable," Khalil said, adding, "Unless they feel there is some sort of accountability, it will continue to go unchecked."

Khalil described the emotional distress he experienced while detained by ICE, awaiting news of his son's birth. "I cannot describe the pain of that night," he told the Associated Press. "This is something I will never forgive."

According to Khalil, any settlement money received will be shared with others who were allegedly targeted by officials for their involvement in pro-Palestinian protests. He views the claim as the first step towards ensuring accountability for what he describes as a "fascist agenda."

Khalil's Demands: Accountability and Justice

Khalil has stated that his primary goal isn't personal enrichment but rather to achieve real accountability for the injustices he believes he suffered. He is open to accepting an official apology from the Trump administration in lieu of the $20 million claim.

The Allegations:

  • Wrongful Imprisonment
  • Malicious Prosecution
  • Defamation (Accusations of antisemitism)
