Alaska Hit by Multiple Earthquakes: What You Need to Know

Alaska has experienced a series of earthquakes in recent days, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The seismic activity has raised concerns among residents and prompted discussions about earthquake preparedness.

On Wednesday, a significant 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Sand Point, Alaska, at a depth of 36 kilometers (approximately 22.4 miles). Fortunately, the USGS reported receiving no immediate reports of people feeling the earthquake at the time of publication. This major quake was preceded by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake earlier that same day, centered near Atka at a depth of 69 kilometers (about 43 miles). The USGS received only one report of someone feeling that tremor.

Prior to Wednesday's events, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake was reported on Friday near Adak, at a depth of 53 kilometers (about 33 miles). The USGS also noted no reports of the quake being felt.

Global Seismic Activity

Alaska isn't the only region experiencing earthquake activity. Recent reports from the USGS also highlight earthquakes in other parts of the world:

  • Guatemala: A 5.6-magnitude earthquake on July 8, centered in Amatitlán.
  • New Zealand: A 6.3-magnitude earthquake on July 7, centered in Riverton.

Are You Prepared for an Earthquake?

These events serve as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness. It is crucial to have a plan in place and know what to do before, during, and after an earthquake. Consider assembling an emergency kit with essential supplies such as water, food, and a first-aid kit. Familiarize yourself with earthquake safety procedures, such as drop, cover, and hold on.

Stay informed about potential hazards in your area and follow the guidance of local authorities. Being prepared can make a significant difference in ensuring your safety and well-being during an earthquake.
