John Goodman: From 'Frightening' Start to 'Acting Hero' Laurie Metcalf!
John Goodman, the beloved actor known for his roles in 'Roseanne,' 'The Conners,' and as the voice of Papa Smurf, recently shared insights into his career journey. From his early struggles in New York City to his admiration for co-star Laurie Metcalf, Goodman's story is one of passion and dedication.
Early Days in NYC: A 'Frightening' Experience
Goodman revealed that his early days in New York City were “frightening.” Fifty years ago, after leaving college, he moved to the Big Apple to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Despite the challenges, he knew he had to take the leap or risk regretting it for the rest of his life.
Before finding fame on 'Roseanne,' Goodman initially hoped to play college football, but an injury and grades led him to discover his passion for acting. He threw himself into his school’s theater program and found he excelled in a way he hadn't before.
'The Conners' and Working with Laurie Metcalf
Goodman also discussed his role in 'The Conners,' the 'Roseanne' spin-off. He said that working with his co-stars, especially Laurie Metcalf, was a major draw. Metcalf, who played his TV sister-in-law, was described by Goodman as his “acting hero.”
“My acting hero Laurie Metcalf was worth the price of admission,” Goodman said. “It was worth showing up every day for work just to see what that woman would do. She's magic. She's just she's amazing. And God, she made me laugh. You know, my jaw would drop when I'd watch her. She's so good.”
The Conners spinoff was developed after a 2018 Roseanne revival was cut short. The rest of the cast moved on with The Conners spinoff.
Still Learning: Goodman's Humility
Even with his extensive experience and success, Goodman emphasizes that he is still learning the craft of acting with every new project, as he revealed promoting the new “Smurfs” movie. This humility and dedication to his craft are part of what makes him such a respected and beloved actor.
