Miami-Dade Shooting: Bodycam Footage Released! What REALLY Happened?
Miami-Dade Deputy Shooting: New Video Emerges
Newly released body camera and aerial footage from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) sheds light on the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Kristofer Lazaro Laboy on June 17th in the West Little River area. The incident occurred outside an apartment complex near Northwest 85th Street Road and Fourth Court, just outside Miami city limits.
According to the MDSO, Deputy Kelvin Cox, a 23-year veteran of the force, shot and killed Laboy after a traffic stop attempt. Deputies from the Robbery Intervention Detail tried to pull over a yellow Chevrolet Corvette with dark tints. Authorities claim Laboy fled in the vehicle, and they tracked him to the Sunset Palm Villas Association complex.
The released video shows Deputy Cox yelling, “Put the gun down!” and then exclaiming “Oh, s---!” upon seeing Laboy allegedly armed with a gun. Cox then opened fire. The video also depicts Cox picking up Laboy's gun after the shooting and moving it away. MDSO stated that officers found marijuana and prescription drugs in Laboy's car.
Conflicting Accounts and Family Outcry
Laboy's family members have disputed the MDSO's narrative. One family member stated, “He is no damn thug. He was a loving son, brother and nephew.” Laboy's father reported that his son called him in a panic before the shooting, claiming he was being chased and needed help. He also stated his son had a concealed carry permit and carried a gun for protection.
Investigation Underway
The shooting remains under investigation. Deputy Cox has been involved in two previous fatal shootings, both of which were ruled justifiable. The release of the video comes after demands from Laboy's family for transparency in the investigation.
- MDSO claims Laboy was armed and fled from a traffic stop.
- Family claims Laboy was panicked and had a concealed carry permit.
- The investigation is ongoing.
