Hudson Police Involved in Shooting Incident

Hudson, Ohio – A dramatic incident unfolded early Thursday morning when Hudson police shot a man allegedly wielding a hammer. The suspect has been identified as a well-known former criminal defense attorney with a recent history of mental health issues.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is currently investigating the shooting, which occurred on State Route 91 (Darrow Road) near Stoney Hill Drive. Police responded to a call at approximately 4:11 a.m. reporting a man yelling at motorists and walking barefoot along the road.

Upon arrival, officers encountered the suspect, who allegedly “aggressively confronted” them while brandishing a hammer, according to a press release from the city of Hudson. An officer then discharged their weapon, striking the man. He was subsequently transported to Summa Health in Akron for medical treatment; his current condition is unknown.

Suspect Allegedly Broke Into Gas Station Before Confrontation

Investigators believe the suspect may have broken into a nearby Sunoco gas station just minutes before the shooting. The owner, Nick Patel, reported that the man repeatedly smashed the front door with what appeared to be a hammer around 4:04 a.m. Patel’s alarm system alerted him to the break-in. He stated that the man did not enter the store or steal anything, simply breaking the glass before leaving.

Community Reaction

The incident has shaken the Hudson community. Neighbor Kim DeMassimo reported being awakened by police activity and officers searching her neighbor's duplex. The portion of Route 91 was closed for several hours during the investigation.

The Ohio Patrolmen's Benevolent Association is representing the Hudson police officers involved. BCI has confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident.

This is a developing story, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
