DUT Student Death: Higher Education Dept Launches Probe
The Department of Higher Education has confirmed it is investigating the tragic death of a student at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). The student reportedly died by suicide on Tuesday after jumping from a building at the Steve Biko campus.
Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Minister of Higher Education Buti Manamela has requested a full report from the university and has emphasized the need for urgent counselling and psychosocial support for students, staff, and witnesses who may have been affected by this devastating event.
"The minister will allow the investigative process to proceed," said Department spokesperson Matshepo Seedat. "Once the full report is received, the minister will issue a more comprehensive statement."
Minister Manamela has expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased student. He has also made a public appeal urging people not to share videos of the incident online, showing respect for the family and the sensitive nature of the tragedy.
The university is expected to cooperate fully with the investigation and provide support services to its community during this difficult time. The focus remains on understanding the circumstances that led to this tragedy and preventing similar incidents in the future.
