South Africa is preparing for a significant cold snap this week, with the Weather Service issuing warnings for extreme weather conditions nationwide. Get ready for a chilly ride!

Snow Expected in Most Provinces

Brace yourselves, South Africa! Snowfall is anticipated in eight out of nine provinces, excluding Limpopo. This unusual weather pattern is due to a severe cold front combined with strong, potentially damaging winds. Authorities are cautioning residents to prepare for potential disruptions, especially on roads. Expect icy conditions and reduced visibility.

Impact on Different Regions

The cold front is expected to arrive in the Cape early on Saturday, bringing heavy rain to the western parts of the Western Cape, as well as cold, wet, and windy weather across much of the Cape provinces. Underberg and western mountainous areas of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are forecast to experience heavy snowfall on Monday, with extremely low temperatures.

According to forecasters, light snow is expected in the Cederberg mountains in the Western Cape and the Nuweveld and Roggeveld mountains in the Northern Cape late on Saturday and overnight into Sunday morning. On Sunday, expect light snow to spread over the high-lying regions in the Karoo, including around Loxton, Nieu-Bethesda, and Noupoort.

Gauteng and Mpumalanga at Risk?

While models differ, there's a possibility of light snow over the southern parts of Gauteng and the southern Highveld of Mpumalanga on Monday. Keep an eye on the forecast for updates in your area!

Safety Precautions

Small stock farmers are strongly advised to take measures to protect their livestock from the cold and wind. All residents should ensure they have adequate heating and are prepared for potential power outages. Drive carefully and be aware of black ice, particularly in mountainous areas.

  • Stay indoors if possible during the worst of the weather.
  • Check weather updates regularly.
  • Ensure your vehicle is properly maintained for winter driving.

Stay safe and warm, South Africa! This cold snap is predicted to last until the middle of next week, so be prepared for the long haul.
