Mango Airlines: Is a Comeback on the Cards for Mzansi's Favourite Budget Airline?
Good news for South African travellers! Mango Airlines, the beloved budget carrier, has announced that it's in the 'final stages' of securing a deal with a potential investor, raising hopes for a relaunch. This follows a period of uncertainty after the airline's suspension of operations back in 2021.
Who's the Potential Investor?
Last year, Travel News reported that Ubuntu Air Services, a partnership between AfricaStay (a South African tour operator specialising in Indian Ocean holidays) and DG Capital, is the investor in question. This partnership could inject the necessary capital and expertise to get Mango back in the air.
What About Unflown Tickets?
Mango is currently working on a process to validate unflown tickets and vouchers that were purchased before the suspension. If the investment deal goes through, passengers holding these tickets will receive a voucher equivalent to the original value, redeemable when Mango resumes flights. However, if the deal falls through, these tickets will be treated as creditor claims, and passengers will receive a portion of their money back as a dividend payout within the business rescue process. This payout might not cover the entire ticket value.
Important Dates: The Mango Verification Portal
Passengers needing to verify unflown tickets must submit their information through the Mango verification portal before September 1st. Submissions after this date will not be accepted. So, if you're holding an unflown Mango ticket, don't delay!
What the Comeback Means for South African Aviation
A successful Mango comeback would be a significant boost for the South African aviation industry, providing affordable travel options and creating jobs. The return of Mango would increase competition, potentially leading to lower fares and more choices for consumers. The future of Mango Airlines hinges on the successful conclusion of this investment deal, and many South Africans are eagerly awaiting the outcome.
