A British law student's dream has turned into a horrifying reality after being sentenced to 25 years in a Dubai prison for possession of cocaine. Mia O'Brien, 23, a promising law student from the University of Liverpool, now faces a quarter of a century behind bars in a facility known for its brutal conditions and rampant abuse.
The Shocking Sentence
O'Brien was found with 50 grams of cocaine, worth approximately $3,400, in a Dubai apartment. Her mother, Danielle McKenna, claims her daughter pleaded not guilty but was subjected to an unfair trial conducted entirely in Arabic. The sentence also includes a hefty $136,000 fine.
“She was just given a life sentence and has to serve 25 years,” McKenna told the Daily Mail. “The trial was all in Arabic, and Mia was told of the sentence later by her lawyer. She is absolutely devastated by what has happened.”

The conditions inside Dubai's Central Prison are reportedly appalling. Overcrowding, inhumane treatment, and brutal guards are commonplace. Shockingly, rape is described as an “everyday occurrence” within the prison walls.

McKenna expressed her daughter's despair at the situation. “Mia feels she has destroyed her life as she wanted to be a lawyer or solicitor,” she said. The incident has not only landed O'Brien in prison but has also shattered her career aspirations.
