Cape Town Weather Warning: Strong Winds and High Waves Expected

Capetonians, prepare for a wild week! The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued Yellow level 1 and Yellow level 2 warnings for damaging winds and waves affecting the Central Karoo district and False Bay coast. Time to dust off those windbreakers and layer up!

According to SAWS, a cold front is passing south of the country, followed by a high-pressure system. This is set to unleash strong westerly to south-westerly winds, reaching 40 to 50kph with gusts of 70 to 90 kph, across the southern interior of the Namakwa district (Northern Cape) and the Central Karoo district (Western Cape) from Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning.

Possible Impacts of the Severe Weather

SAWS warns of potential localised structural damage, longer travel times, and challenges for high-sided vehicles. Be extra cautious on the roads!

Coastal Areas to Bear the Brunt

Expect gale force winds (50 to 70kph, gusting 80 to 100kph) between Cape Point and Cape Agulhas from Monday afternoon, spreading to Plettenberg Bay by evening. These winds, combined with south-westerly swells of 4m to 6m, will create very rough and choppy sea conditions.

  • Navigation at sea will be difficult.
  • Small vessels and personal watercraft risk taking on water and capsizing.
  • Localised disruptions to beachfront activities and small harbours/ports are likely.

The winds are expected to ease from Tuesday evening, but the high waves will persist until Wednesday morning. Stay safe, South Africa!
