Malawi Elections 2025: Fuel Queues & Youth Hopes Shape the Vote!
Malawi is gearing up for the 2025 general elections, but the mood is far from celebratory. Instead of the usual vibrant campaigning, a sense of frustration hangs in the air, fuelled by persistent petrol shortages, power cuts, rising living costs, and high unemployment. Many Malawians are more concerned about securing fuel than casting their votes.
The presidential race is essentially a rematch between incumbent Lazarus Chakwera and Peter Mutharika, the man he defeated in the controversial 2020 rerun. However, the economic hardships are overshadowing the political contest. The usual fanfare, including free t-shirts and giant billboards, is noticeably absent, reflecting the country's tight financial situation.
The fuel shortage has become a major election issue. President Chakwera has acknowledged the public's frustration and accused corrupt officials of sabotaging the oil market. This comes as desperate young men are selling fuel in small containers at exorbitant prices just to survive.
Youth Vote a Deciding Factor
Despite the widespread cynicism, the youth of Malawi remain a crucial force in the upcoming elections. Malawians under 35 constitute the majority of the electorate, making their participation, or lack thereof, a potential game-changer. They are voting for survival amidst a weakened economy, high inflation, and persistent corruption concerns.
The United Transformation Movement (UTM), previously allied with Chakwera, is now running independently following the tragic death of Vice President Saulos Chilima. Dr. Dalitso Kabambe has been nominated as UTM's candidate.
Former President Joyce Banda, Malawi's first female president, is also in the running, adding another layer of complexity to the political landscape.
Economic Hardship and Fading Hope
Malawi's youth are facing significant challenges, including limited job opportunities and rising food costs. Their hopes and fears are central to understanding the dynamics of the 2025 elections.
