Madlanga Commission: Mkhwanazi's Explosive Testimony

Pretoria - The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry continues to hear shocking testimony, with KwaZulu-Natal's top cop, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, taking centre stage. Day two of the inquiry saw Mkhwanazi expand on his previous revelations, painting a concerning picture of corruption and obstruction within the police force.

Mkhwanazi, the first witness called to the commission, has alleged outside interference prematurely halted the critical work of the Political Killings Task Team. This interference, he claims, significantly hampered investigations into high-profile murders and political violence in the region.

Bribes and Disbanded Task Teams

Further details have emerged regarding alleged bribery attempts targeting police officers. Mkhwanazi revealed that some officials were offered bribes, suggesting a deliberate effort to undermine investigations and protect those involved in criminal activities. He also criticised the decision by the now-suspended police minister, Senzo Mchunu, to disband an elite task team investigating high-profile murders. This decision led to the withdrawal of 121 dockets, further delaying justice for victims and their families.

The dockets were initially pulled in May but were returned to the team on August 28. Remarkably, within a week of the dockets being transferred back to KwaZulu-Natal, the task team made arrests of murder accused in key cases. This highlights the effectiveness of the team and raises serious questions about the motives behind its initial disbandment.

The Madlanga Commission aims to uncover the truth behind political killings and related issues in KwaZulu-Natal. Mkhwanazi's testimony provides crucial insights into the challenges faced by law enforcement in the province and the systemic issues that need to be addressed to ensure justice prevails. The inquiry continues to unfold, with more witnesses expected to come forward with further revelations.
