Downs Penalty Drama! Was the Ref Right? Experts Weigh In!
Mamelodi Sundowns' 3-1 victory over Durban City wasn't without its drama! A controversial penalty decision had fans and players alike buzzing. But was the referee correct?
The Incident: Penalty Controversy Rocks Sundowns Victory
Durban City were awarded a penalty after Malibongwe Khoza was judged to have brought down Trevor Bokang Mokwena inside the box. While Joslin Kamatuka ultimately missed the penalty thanks to a stunning save by Ronwen Williams, the Sundowns players clearly felt aggrieved by referee Tshidiso Mkwanazi's decision.
Former FIFA Referee Weighs In
Former FIFA referee Jerome Damon, who also served as the match commissioner, has given his expert opinion. In an exclusive interview, Damon stated that the penalty was the correct call.
"The Sundowns defender trips the Durban City player by making contact with his left leg, which causes the attacker's left leg to knock into his right leg, resulting in him falling," Damon explained. "It’s denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity but the Mamelodi Sundowns player was challenging for the ball. So penalty kick correct."
