SAMA Cuts Ties! Why SA Doctors Are Distancing Themselves From Israel!
The South African Medical Association (SAMA) has taken a significant step, suspending all professional and bilateral relations with the Israeli Medical Association (IMA). This drastic move comes amidst growing concerns about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza and the IMA's adherence to international medical ethics.
SAMA released a statement outlining their reasons, stating that the IMA should be barred from the World Medical Association. The association highlights the ongoing suffering in Gaza and questions the IMA's conduct concerning humanitarian obligations.
The suspension will remain in effect until the IMA addresses key concerns. These include demanding the immediate release of all detained Palestinian medical personnel and publicly condemning the systematic destruction of Gaza's healthcare system. SAMA is also urging the IMA to condemn the use of starvation as a policy and the blockade preventing essential medical supplies from reaching those in need.
Furthermore, SAMA insists that the IMA must take concrete steps to guarantee adequate medical care for all individuals under Israeli control, especially Palestinians held in detention.
This bold decision by SAMA underscores the increasing pressure on international organizations to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza and ensure the ethical conduct of medical professionals in conflict zones.
