Gauteng police have made a massive dent in crime, arresting over 1,500 suspects during Operation Shanela II! This high-intensity operation, led by Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, targeted serious offences across all districts in the province.
The operation, which took place over the weekend of October 4-5, 2025, focused on wanted criminals, illegal mining, drug dealing, and other priority crimes. It involved a coordinated effort from multiple law enforcement agencies, showing a united front against lawlessness.
Key Arrests and Focus Areas
Detectives apprehended a staggering 1,261 wanted suspects. Shockingly, 177 of those arrests were for crimes against women and children, highlighting the ongoing battle against gender-based violence in Gauteng. The operation also targeted illegal mining, a significant problem costing the South African economy billions each year.
Gauteng spokesperson for Community safety Ofentse Morwane says the operations searched over 4 400 people and over 1300 vehicles in all five regions in Gauteng and about 1 491 traffic fines were issued to motorists while 24 vehicles were impounded.
Operation Shanela II: A Nationwide Effort
Operation Shanela II is a nationwide initiative aimed at tackling crime hotspots. In Gauteng, the operation involved roadblocks, searches, and intelligence-led raids. This latest round builds on previous successes, with over 15,000 arrests nationwide in September 2025 alone.
Morwane further encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious behavior in their respective areas to a nearest police station.
The Gauteng police are sending a clear message: crime will not be tolerated. They vow to continue their efforts to make the streets safer for all residents.
