The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has joined forces with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the BrightSpark Foundation SA, along with various civil-society organisations, to reinforce school safety across the province. This collaboration culminated in a three-day Safer Schools campaign, highlighting a strong commitment to creating secure learning environments for all students.
Safer Schools Campaign: A United Front
The campaign, which ran from October 13th to 15th, included a formal pledge-signing ceremony held at Henley Business School on October 15th. This initiative is part of a larger national strategy designed to improve cooperation between law enforcement and education authorities, ensuring schools remain safe, functional, and conducive to learning.
What Actions Were Taken?
During the first two days of the campaign, SAPS conducted several coordinated safety operations throughout Gauteng. These operations included:
- Search-and-seizure missions at high-risk schools
- Compliance checks for scholar transport
- Inspections of liquor outlets located near school premises
Parades and briefings were also conducted at Eldorado Park and Tembisa police stations, further demonstrating the commitment to increased school safety.
Pledge-Signing Event: A Symbol of Unity
The campaign concluded with a pledge-signing event attended by learners, educators, police officials, and community partners. This event symbolized a unified stance against crime, substance abuse, and violence within and around school environments. The goal is to foster safer spaces where students can thrive academically and personally.
Words of Encouragement
Professor Jon Foster-Pedley, Dean and Director of Henley Business School, inspired learners to believe in their potential and make positive choices. He emphasized the importance of self-belief, discipline, and respect for parents and teachers. He also cautioned against bringing weapons or drugs to school, urging students to help others, speak out, and trust in themselves.
Director Sifiso Ngobese from the National Department echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of continued collaboration between all stakeholders.
