Diwali Shines Bright! Millions Celebrate Festival of Lights in India

Diwali Celebrations Illuminate India: A Festival of Light and Joy

Millions across India celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, with vibrant displays of lamps and festive cheer. Homes and streets were bathed in the warm glow of diyas, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness.

Diwali, originating from the Sanskrit word “Deepavali” meaning “a row of lights,” is a time for socializing, exchanging gifts, and celebrating new beginnings. The festival's dates are determined by the Hindu lunar calendar, typically occurring in late October or early November.

Markets bustled with shoppers eager to purchase flowers, lanterns, and candles, adding to the festive atmosphere. The most spectacular celebrations unfolded in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, a city deeply revered by Hindus as the birthplace of Lord Ram, who returned after 14 years of exile. The lighting of lamps signifies his homecoming.

Record-Breaking Illumination in Ayodhya

Ayodhya set a new Guinness World Record by lighting over 2.6 million lamps along the banks of the Saryu River, surpassing last year's record. The air was filled with the chants of 2,100 Hindu priests performing prayers, their voices resonating across the illuminated riverfront. The city was adorned with fairy lights, and a dazzling laser and fireworks show lit up its lanes and riverbanks. Thousands of residents joined in, illuminating their homes and temples with lamps.

Over 33,000 volunteers contributed to lighting the lamps, with nearly 40 families from nearby villages producing 1.6 million diyas. The massive undertaking required at least 73,000 liters of oil and 5.5 million cotton wicks.

Volunteers Share the Joy

"It is hard work lighting diyas (oil lamps) one by one,” said Rachit Singh, a 19-year-old volunteer. “But when you see the whole ghat (stairs to the river) light up, every bit of effort feels worth it.” His words perfectly encapsulate the spirit of Diwali – a celebration of hope, community, and the enduring power of light.
