Manchester United are reportedly intensifying their search for midfield reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window, with Sporting CP's Morten Hjulmand emerging as a key target. Sources indicate that Ruben Amorim, now at Manchester United, is a big admirer of the 26-year-old Danish midfielder, having previously coached him at Sporting Lisbon.
Hjulmand: A Perfect Fit for Man Utd?
Their successful collaboration in Lisbon, where Hjulmand anchored a title-winning side with his tenacity and precise passing, makes him a natural fit for Amorim’s vision at Old Trafford. TEAMtalk understands that United are optimistic about securing Hjulmand for around £50m, despite his £70m release clause, as Sporting may be open to negotiations given their relationship with their former manager.
City Also in the Mix?
However, Manchester United aren't the only club interested. Reports suggest that Manchester City are also closely monitoring Hjulmand, potentially setting up a January transfer battle. Both clubs have strong links to Sporting, with Amorim at United and Hugo Viana, City's director of football, having ties to the Portuguese club.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas acknowledged interest in Hjulmand during the summer, and while the player reportedly turned down offers to triple his salary, January could present a different scenario. Sporting are reportedly adamant they won’t negotiate below Hjulmand’s €80m (£69.8m) release clause.
Other Midfield Targets
While Hjulmand is a prime target, Manchester United are also considering other midfield options. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton remains a top target, although he would command a significant fee. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is also highly rated, but a January move is considered “too difficult.” Jobe Bellingham and Porto’s Victor Froholdt are also reportedly on United's radar.
